Diane Petkoff Bentley started making jewelry when she was 7 years old. With a curiosity for how to build things and create what she saw in her mind, her love of jewelry making began. Like a lot of artists she created her work for friends and family, then decided it was a little more than a hobby to her. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree specializing in Metals from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign.
"It's my creative process to first be inspired by the materials I use, then start working on a piece. I think this helps me see a collection as a whole rather than individual pieces trying to connect to one another. I love resourcing non-traditional materials and finding out ways to use them in my designs. It might seem like a bit of an odd process or maybe backwards to some, but it's always been the way I've worked. As I'm making something I allow the technique to evolve so that I'm creating new variants off of one idea. This is how I come up with a collection. In the past I have used such materials as; placemats, straws, childrens toys, rubber and vinyl decals. Those might not seem crazy now, but I've been at this a long time."
Why "Tasty Jewelry" you might ask? "I have always thought that beads looked like candy so sometimes a necklace looks edible. It's a play on the senses. Food is something that touches all of them, and while you can only see and touch my jewelry, I'd hope that it evokes the same type of pleasure that food does."
Diane recently got married and moved from Austin, TX to Toronto, Ontario. "It's been a pretty big change, but I had previously lived in Chicago for a long time so the weather was not a huge shock to me. I also have someone to keep me warm at night so that's always a plus! Austin had a very vibrant & active artistic community. I am hoping to find that here in Toronto."
Tasty Jewelry plans to keep bringing fresh and unique designs to you seasonally. You never know what you'll find so be sure to check back often.
